Skip Stein - Freelance

Experienced Editor and Writer

My name is Skip Stein, and I began my business career with HJS Enterprises, which I started in 1994 as an Information Technology consulting enterprise. That work later evolved into Management Systems Consulting, Inc., a Sub‑S corporation, through which I consulted independently for over three decades.

In 2010, everything changed. I received a deadly diagnosis of aggressive prostate cancer. Instead of accepting the usual script, I redirected my life and work to focus on healing, health, and longevity. That shift became Whole Foods 4 Healthy Living (wholefoods4healthyliving.com) and my cancer story at

Throughout my consulting career, I wrote many technical reports and contributed to professional journals. But after retiring shortly after that cancer diagnosis, I discovered that writing could be both therapeutic and deeply enjoyable. Over time, I moved from technical documents to more personal, exploratory, and opinionated work.

I am, by nature, a heterodoxical person—heretical, if you prefer—on many subjects and belief systems. So my writing here will span various topics, often highly opinionated, and hopefully both provocative and enjoyable.
Over the past decade, I’ve:
  • Contributed to several Health & Wellness journals and websites
  • Published my autobiography
  • Written a travel picture book following our first 43‑day road trip of over 10,000 miles across much of the Western USA
  • Published a book about surviving cancer
  • Co‑authored two additional books with my wife, Chef Nancy
  • Designed, written content for, and maintained around 28 different websites

Before “retiring,” I was a well‑traveled business professional, working for companies across the USA and traveling to Europe and China. Since retiring, I’ve traveled extensively across the United States on road trips and have hiked and visited over 120 National Parks.

A major part of my life’s work now is devoted to researching and understanding how whole foods support health and wellness. As a nutritional holistic cancer survivor, I’ve seen firsthand how lifestyle and dietary changes can influence the progression—and even reversal—of disease. That experience has given me a foundation for writing about a healthy, vital lifestyle that can support the strenuous demands placed on today’s executives and professionals.

Here on Substack, I bring together:
My background in IT, systems, and data
  • My experience as a cancer survivor
  • My work with Whole Foods 4 Healthy Living
  • My love of travel, hiking, and wide‑ranging heterodox ideas
I offer candid, sometimes challenging, and always personal reflections on health, longevity, travel, and life
If any of that resonates with you, I invite you to read along, and join the conversation.

Healing truly is an art as it combines many intuitive, creative and intellectual skills to achieve a state of being for a patient who is displaying symptoms of bodily/mental imbalance.  The healing process most often involves a combination of skills and that skill is seldom seen in a traditional medical practitioner’s office.  This booklet is intended to offer some insight to alternatives and awareness to help individuals accept and assume more control over their health, wellness and longevity.
